Dear friends, there’s a saying that goes
like this: YOU’LL never know till You have
TRIED..
and this is my story…
I will never forgot the last weekend..
So here it goes..I bumped to a website of scholarship called Quota Scheme. It is a scholarship granted by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund to study at public and private universities in Norway.
It is eligible for applicants from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and developing countries.
So I guess i knew about this scholarship around 20 Nov 2010. I sent an email to the University of Oslo, and got the reply on 24th of Nov, the staff told me that I might interested in their Master of Philosophy in Culture, the Environment, and Sustainability.
They told me that the scholarship is limited to their partner institutions, in fact after I checked their website, there are two partner institutions: Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Indonesia. It only meant that I could apply but didn’t mean I’d be made a priority, because I thought that the cooperation perhaps only a formal agreement, of course they will give priority to students who are involved in an ongoing project. FYI, UGM has a cooperation for several major, such as Human Rights, Law, and also the major that was being offered by the staff at the International Education Office! and i just couldn’t believe it because UI has less cooperation, only two major in UiO. (Uni of Oslo)
However, there’s something bugging me. They asked for an official TOEFL score sent from ETS. Darn!! Gosh, from what I know, it took around two weeks to be delivered. Then I contacted the International Education Office again, asking whether i can send them my extra score report along with the supporting document and waiting for them to reply..
Without thinking about making the motivation letter, I went to the nearby Post Office, and asked for the service to Norway. They told me it takes about 5 days, and the fee is Rp. 260.000 something. Well, not that surprise, it will be sent to Europe for God’s sake! Just as I stepped my feet outside from the post office, It’s started to rain heavily.. water pouring from the sky in an excruciatingly immense amount. LOL
I start to find a way to get out from there.. until suddenly the lady who sold the mailing utensils offered to lend me her umbrella. That’s very nice of her. So here I go again, walking through the 15 cm of water..I could imagine that it would itch.
Oh well, i was heading to the TIKI service nearby..I got there and asked about the fee. They told me that it’s around 500 thousand, and if I added just a tiny photo, they will charge it as parcel..LOL. and the price is doubled!.
hahahaah….so it’s 1 Million rupiah.. well well well…
Hmm,,, that evening, I went home by bike , felt like it’s so heavy to paddle it..
I don’t know it’s because I just heard a rather shocking fact, or something else. And the fact I only had a few money left on my account.
I just don’t wanna go home yet. So I went to Dunkin Donuts in Jalan Kaliurang Km. 5.
I ordered a glass of hot chocolate accompanied by a bread I bought last night at Parsley. Well… I felt exhausted and looked so messy..huehuheuhue
Later that night, I received a reply. The staff told me that the TOEFL score report is valid only if being sent by ETS. Well, she added that it’s okay if it comes a bit late. So I think it’s a good news. I then tried to compose the motivation letter..and felt very motivated..LOL
I spent the night, dawn, and morning ..thinking, writing, re-writing, and editing. Finally I finished in the morning around 11 am. And without showering, I went to nearby photocopy, and print shop , then headed to TIKI again..
Well before, at around 7 or 8 my mum called, I told her about this scholarship, and she told me that she’d let me apply, as long as it’s the right thing to do..though I’ve told her it could cost about 1 million just to deliver them..and she sent me money that early morning..thank you mum..
Given the permission, I didn’t hesitate to try my luck.
I arrived at TIKI, and started to ask about the service again. It was quite crowded, and people were asking about the delay of the delivery, because from what i’ve heard, the flight from Jogja to jakarta hasn’t been restored to the normal condition. So, well… and then the guy started to ask their partner institution called UPS, it’s from the US i guess…
They finally told me that they didn’t deliver document to a PO BOX address. So they told me to find another address or it’s better for me to go directly to UPS outlet. But I barely knew my way around here….LOL.
So one of the staff told me to go to DHL in Babarsari, close to Amplas from what I heard from my sister.
Then I went there using trans-jogja, parked my bike in front of TIKI. I felt so freaking exhausted but still there’s a hope in my heart.
I waited and waited for the next bus, and then I suddenly got the idea of googling DHL’s office number in Jogja, I got it and I called them. They also had another outlet across halte Bethesda. So I crossed the street, and took another bus route.
I arrived at halte bethesda, and asked to the lady at the warung, she told me it’s just on the next building.. There I met the DHL staff, a girl, nice and friendly, and she told me the fee was 5oo thousand something, and they can’t guarantee that it will reach Norway by Dec 1st. LOL. There, Once again, I was stranded and lost for a while. My phone battery was dead, I couldn’t contact anyone for a 2nd opinion whether I had to send them or not..
Finally, I took my chances, i don’t care whether it will arrive late, though I know there’s a good chance it might not be accepted. but somehow a voice inside my heart told me that I’ve come so far, and why wouldn’t I give it a shot. It’s now or never I said!
I sent them, and before, I wrote on the back of the envelope, explaining about the possible delay of the delivery, and also telling them from my heart, that it’s been an honor to be able to just apply for the scholarship,,, indeed because it has inspired me and I came up with the idea for my master thesis, and maybe a plan to pursue a career on the environment. I was also thanking them for the kind assistance in replying my inquires about the scholarship. I do feel very grateful..
My doc consist of:
- Attestation letter, signed and a photo was attached
- Original certified copy of STTB SMA, and transcript, with the translation
- University diploma and transcript, certified copies stamped and signed
- Copy of passport
- One page of motivation letter
-Copy of TOEFL IBT score report
-and I registered online as well.
After I sent them, I ate KFC. What a day.. I went back to get my bike, and went home..
Then, I checked on DHL website, to find out about the rate and time of delivery..they estimated that it can reach oslo by 30 Nov..
Well, there’s still hope once again..
and everyday I monitored my package through the tracking tools.
I can’t believe that within weekend (27-28 Nov 2010), my doc has reached several countries…they told me before, that their delivery is excluding the weekend.. well, maybe I got lucky, and there’s probably available flight on the weekend.. so here it goes where my document left traces outside Indonesia…=D
